HERE WE WILL DISCUSS VARIOUS ISSUES PERTAINING TO SINGING. WHEN YOU START A NEW SUBJECT OR REPLY TO AN EXISTING ONE, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR VOICE TYPE (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, etc.) WITH YOUR NAME. IF YOUR VOICE WAS NEVER CLASSIFIED, JUST PUT WHAT PART YOU SING IN THE CHOIR: Sop I or II, Alto I or II, etc. THANKS!!!
My bad I realized I didn't follow none'a the directions. So now I filled in all the pertinent info.

Norah just doesn't do it for me for some reason. Maybe it's the Macy Gray-ish voice thing (though I like Macy Gray occasionally), or maybe it's just her vibe but something doesn't sit right with me. I do appreciate her artistry and applaud her for getting out there and being not-nekkid and really saying something. So, she's doing something good, just not for me.

Singers, what do we think of Norah Jones? Her performance of "Don't Know Why" on the Grammy show last Sunday night was VERY good. I also liked her attitude as she picked up award after award - thanking the musicians that played on the album; seeming very humble and grateful for the honors. I think her big win was a sign of hope that singers of good music can still succeed in this industry. What do YOU think?
DB, you're a scream!

Although Norah Jones does have that back-in-the-throat sound going on, I don't think I'm feeling the Macy Gray reference. Norah's tones are true-er - I'm never sure if Macy Gray knows what she's doing. TEE HEE

I agree that she definitely has a better tone and is more stable vocally. I meant on her "Don't know whaayyy..." if you know what I'm talking about there. Her vowel is annoying whereas I like it on Macy. But yeah, that is a faulty comparison. I was just trying to help illustrate what it is about her singing that irks me. And it's that Macy vowel thang. Also I was also annoyed to find she doesn't write her own material. Not that that in and of itself is a bad thing, but I don't know... She just isn't for me yet. I may end up loving her eventually. We'll see

I understand what you mean. I don't dig the back-of-the-throat sound 'cause it cuts off your tone. India.Arie does it too. If she ever opened her throat, she'd be PHENOMENAL!
It doesn't bother me if a singer doesn't write. Sinatra didn't write, but he was VERY involved in the choice of material and the band/orchestral arrangements of around his voice. Streisand only wrote "Evergreen". Norah's CD was recorded like very much like the old school where arrangements complimented the singer.
