HERE WE WILL DISCUSS VARIOUS ISSUES PERTAINING TO SINGING. WHEN YOU START A NEW SUBJECT OR REPLY TO AN EXISTING ONE, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR VOICE TYPE (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, etc.) WITH YOUR NAME. IF YOUR VOICE WAS NEVER CLASSIFIED, JUST PUT WHAT PART YOU SING IN THE CHOIR: Sop I or II, Alto I or II, etc. THANKS!!!

Re: Vocal ability vs. image & hype

Well shoot, there are many a beautiful, non-singin' person out there. But also, there are those beauties who can really blow. Let's not be biased against those pretty folks (damn them!). Mariah, Whitney, Lauryn, Jill Scott (though not conventionally beautiful, I think she is amazingly gorgeous), etc. Some folks get all the luck But I'd rather have music than a pretty face any day. Wouldn't you?

Has this ever happened to you? A good friend of mine asked me what I thought about a certain "artist" (who shall remain nameless) who gets alot of hype. I told him that I didn't think she could sing very well. He said, "Yes she can. She's beautiful." And I replied, "She may be beautiful, but she still can't sing!"

Re: Re: Vocal ability vs. image & hype

Exactly my point. But what this guy was trying to say was that this artist could sing BECAUSE she was cute and I was trying to make him understand that she can't sing, he just likes the way she looks! HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

There are artists who are better live (or video) performers than actual singers - people who I have to be watching to appreciate. Mariah's cute, but she's got no stage presence. Janet's cute, is a great performer and I love her overall energy, but she can't really SING. To me, the best singers are the ones I can appreciate whether I'm watching them perform or just playing the CD.

Cassandra Wilson is, of course, an amazing vocalist- and gorgeous, and my whole inspiration when it comes to stage presence. The time I saw her live, I couldn't decide what to focus on- a beautiful show all the way around.

I know this is an old thread, I hope folks see this...

PS- I'm also a Dawn! Robinson fan..... Dawn, I met you years and years ago. I'm an old friend of Benjie Porecki's. Your version of Little Wing still blows my socks off! xo

Re: Re: Re: Re: Vocal ability vs. image & hype

Well, AW SHUCKS, Heather! Thanks for the kudos on "Little Wing." Cover tunes are so tricky - they are rarely as good as the original. And NOBODY can improve on Hendrix!!! But that tune is alot of fun to sing... Benjie Porecki's new CD "How Does It Feel" is out now, as a matter of fact, and he's singing on almost every cut. It's definitely one to check out! As for Cassandra Wilson - I really like her alot also. I caught her a few months ago at The Birchmere. Her voice sounded great, but she just didn't sing enough for me. The cats in the band took these long solos - not that they didn't sound good too. But, you know, I bought the ticket to hear HER - LOL! Anyway... I left there wishing she had sung more... D!
