Re: south carolina genealogy

Hi Stacey!

I tried to find more info on Richard Craven and quickly realized your frustration! :o) In trying to find earlier Cravens, I took a look at the 1800 SC Census and found NO Cravens in SC, although there should have been a few listed! There was one in New York, several in Salisbury, Iredell Co., NC, A LOT in Hillsboro, Randolph Co., NC and a few in Pennsylvania. In the 1790 SC Census, there was a Mrs. Craven in St. Bartholomew, Charleston, a Capt. Robert Cravens in Georgetown, SC near Charleston, and the rest are in other states, most in Randolph Co., NC.

I took a look at the online index for the SC Archives and found the following early Cravens (name, earliest year found, type of document found):

Gov. Charles Craven, 1714, 346 acres in Berkeley Co.
Thomas Craven, 1754, 100 acres in Craven Co.
John Craven, 1786, 240 acres in Camden District
James Cravens, 1786, neighbor to Robert Maxwell, 96 District
Robert Craven, 1790, 404 acres, 96 District
Emanuel Craven, 1792, 67 acres, Charleston District (still living in Charleston District in 1806)
James Craven, 1793, neighbor to Michael Scarborough, Charleston District (still living near Charleston in the Colleton District in 1820)
Jeremiah Craven, 1819, Beaufort District near Charleston
Joseph Craven, 1825, tax returns for 156 acres in St. Bartholomew Parish - Charleston
William T. Craven, 1825, tax returns for 1 slave in St. Bartholomew Parish - Charleston
Charles Craven, 1838, 608 acres, Colleton District

In looking at the 1810 SC Census, I found only Emanuel Craven living near Charleston in Colleton County. In his household, he had 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25 and 7 slaves. He's a strong possiblity for being your Richard Craven's father.

That's all I've come up with so far. If I come across anything else, I'll let you know.

Sincerely,
Dana Risinger
