German pronunciation
If anyone on this forum knows the German language, I would be interested to know if the names Christian and Christopher sound similar in their pronunciation in English and German. |

Hello Jack, On German pronunciation of Christian, it would be pronounced differently in German. Christian is pronounced as Christi - yan. Christopher would be pronounced almost identical to English. So sind die namen auf Deutsch ausgesprochen. Take Care, Bruce Johnson |

Thanks Bruce, My ancestor was John Christian Hildebrand. On some documents he is shown as John Christian and on others he is shown as John Christopher. I was just wondering if they could get confused in either pronouncement or in writing. Jack |

Hello Jack, It sounds as if some local official had a mental lapse when writing a document for your ancestor and wrote the wrong middle name. The problem is, which middle name is correct? My German ancestors were in the Dutch Fork area about the same time as yours - Eleazers and Haltiwangers. Viel Glück (Lots of luck) Bruce Johnson |
