Long Cane Settlement, 96th District, SC - Calhoun Creek
Hello, I am hoping someone could help me locate where Calhoun Creek, Long Cane Settlement, 96th District, SC is. My ancestor, William Wallace, "was a native of Ireland, and came to America in 1773, settled at Long Cane Settlement, S. Carolina and was living there when the trouble broke out. He purchased 2 pieces of land, during the war - 1) 100 acres on Long Cane Settlement from John Brownlee and 2) 150 acres near adjoining from James Anderson." [SOURCE: Ancestry.com]. According to the Long Cane Settler's list, on Rootsweb.com, the properties that he purchased were originally purchased/granted to John Brownlee (11 Sep 1767) and James Anderson (22 Dec 1766) and the location that was given was Calhoun Creek. Therefore, Calhoun Creek would have been part of the Long Cane Settlement. I understand the old 96th District was divided into Abbeville, Greenwood and McCormick Counties after the American Revolution. Does anyone know which county Calhoun Creek, Long Cane Settlement is now located in? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jennifer

Jennifer, On a SC map of 1780 Long Cane is plotted to be approx. 10 miles east of the Georgia line. By following the contour lines of the state boundary I estimate that Long Cane is in Edgefield County, located just west of the town of Edgefield. Keep in mind this is seat-of-the pants dead reckoning. Warm regards, Terry Edwards |

Hello Terry, Thank you so much for your educated guess. I am unfamiliar with current county lines and land forms so I was having difficulty determining where Long Cane would be situated on a current map of SC. I have seen the 1780 map you referred to. Your help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jennifer |
