Hey guys,
I (and im sure others too) have begun to realize that LHS isn't the greatest school in the region as far as music goes. Every once in a while we really shine but for some reason we just cant seem to be as amazing as other bands like Midway (btw Mr. Umhoefer, you rock). I started asking "what do all those schools have that we dont?" The usual list came through my mind: money, private lessons, a bigger staff, more students. But those are things that are out of our controll. What IS in our controll are things like commitment and desire for excellence. One thing that us at LHS have kinda gotten used to is the thought that something is "good enough" to get by--that we've done enough work that we're supposed to do. But we dont realize that all you need to "get by" is to hold your instrument somewhat correctly and sit in a slightly organized manner. It takes more than that to be good, it takes more than that to be great.
The reason im saying this is because next year im gone. Next year John's gone, and Aaron and Richard, Roxy, and the rest of the seniors are not gonna be here any more. And we dont know what's gonna happen to OUR band after we leave. We want to know that our legacy will not have been in vain, and that next year there will be others to carry on what we have built.
We sit in our chair at rehearsal, fumbling around unfamiliar music, fantasizing about other bands that are so great, and how we'll never get there. But THINK ABOUT IT! They breathe the same air we breathe. They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like us (mostly). There is nothing super-human about band geeks from other schools,
...except
They want it enough, they love it enough to reach that excelence. Dont you want it too? To play with a band that plays MUSIC? If not then what are you in band for? If you truly want it, and you truly love it, and you are comitted enough...you'll get it.
Excelence is not a gene, or a pill, or a superhero-
