LANCASTER - More than 1,000 volunteers from two churches plan to paint the exteriors of 44 houses and two public schools Oct. 6 in a project to improve a run-down neighborhood.
City officials will provide Dumpsters and other support, while Central Christian Church and Grace Chapel will provide materials and volunteer labor, Assemblywoman Sharon Runner said.

Piute Middle School and Linda Verde Elementary are scheduled to get fresh coats of paint along with houses in nearby neighborhoods. Lancaster School District will supply the paint for one of the schools, and several local business also pledged materials, she said.

"I commend the pastors and congregations of these two Lancaster churches for taking on a significant challenge," Runner wrote to the Valley Press. "I echo their encouragement to others to follow the example.

There are neighborhoods enough for all faith-based groups to lift up."

The idea for the restoration process came from Emmanuel Reform Church, which had a similar project in Paramount for 10 years. The church has since moved its efforts to neighboring Compton, the assemblywoman said.
