I’d drunk alcoholically for 20 years and had reached the ‘end of the line’. I was very deeply depressed, hated myself, hated what I did and had become so despairing that I tried to take my own life. I had received small amounts of ineffective home treatment through the NHS but I was incredibly fortunate to have a family that were willing to support me in finding an answer to my problems and they looked for, and found, a wonderful privately run facility where I spent six weeks as an ‘inpatient’ and it utterly changed my life.
I can only answer this question based on my personal experience and acknowledge that many others may not have had the same fortunate experience as I did. Everything was focused on our first steps to recovery. That is why I advise you to learn about residential drug rehab. We were looked after 24/7 by support staff who knew what to do.
