hi iam hoping to find where thomas james ballance was born .he married margaret cosgrove in dec 26 1877.at saints johns church laganbank.son born 25may 1880, and my g/father william ballance born 1883.hope someone might be able help. thanks william

Good afternoon, I appreciate that this post was 4 years ago... but on the off chance this manages to find you, I have bee looking at my family ancestry (MCKNIGHT) which you probably know already is linked with the marriage of Jane Balance and John McKnight in Magheragall 1862.

Perhaps some of the information I have managed to gather is of benefit to you.

He served in the Maori War of 1867 and in 1875 entered the House of Representatives, joining the Liberal Party, Minister of Lands and Native Affairs 1884-1887 and made his reputation in the spheres of the economy and land use. He held office as Colonial Treasurer, 1878, as Minister of Lands, Native Affairs and Defence (1884-7). Leader of the opposition 1889 and Prime Minister [1891-3]

John Ballance, the eldest of eleven children of Samuel and Mary Ballance, was born in a cottage sited next to the restored house at Glenavy on 27 March 1839. His father was a tenant farmer on land belonging to the Hertford Estate and as the family grew in size the farmhouse was built to accommodate them. Disinterested in farming, John left school at fourteen and went to Belfast where he was apprenticed to an ironmonger in Belfast. At eighteen he left Ireland for Birmingham where he was a hardware salesman.
In 1863, at the age of 24, John Ballance married Fanny Taylor. Fanny suffered poor health and this, as well as the earlier settlement of her brother at Wanganui, spurred the couple to New Zealand in the hope that the conducive climate would aid her. Here John Ballance established the Evening Herald later called the Wanganui
