Just wondering if anyone has thoughts on the origins of the name. The church at Portmore is said to have been founded by a St Lau. Information on this saint is hard to find. Could the name be a corruption of Lugh, the Celtic sun god? Early Christian churches were often deliberately placed on ancient pagan sites. It is interesting also that the saint's day is August 4th while Lughnasa, the day celebrating the sun god is held on August 1st.
