Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Well, we waited . . . and we waited . . . and we waited . . . and finally this announcement:

Anyone fancy a trip to Scotland??

More importantly, will Lee wear a kilt?????

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

So now we know. I thought perhaps Lee was going to be at one of the summer festivals - Glastonbury or even the Isle of Wight?
Very pleased for all the Scottish fans.

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Sadly, there's no chance of my going to this one. Even if it wasn't so far away, I couldn't cope with a long queue for seats, and even worse, the thought of battling through all those crowds and back every time I needed a loo break has scared me even though I'm not going (big laugh icon here.) But as I've said on other sites, I had a fantastic Lee year last year, maybe something will come up that I can go to soon, and there's always Holby. Besides, I'm sure some of you nice people will post reports and maybe photos for me to enjoy.

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

OH is Scottish. He has several cousins north of the Border who are well due a visit ...... July sounds perfect!

Lee in a kilt - now there's food for thought!

If anyone can get themselves to Perth or Dundee, "The Glamis Prom" on Facebook have given a link to the Happy Bus company, who are providing return coach travel from said towns to Glamis:

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

I was lucky enough to go to Glamis - and what a fabulous evening it was!

We based ourselves in Dundee, arriving the night before the concert, having decided to avail ourselves of the Happy Bus to transport us to the Castle. Everything worked out beautifully (a first for us!) and we arrived at the venue with plenty of time to spare.

The setting was stunning, with the castle to the left of the stage, the gazebos arranged to the right, VIP seating (which meant tables and chairs, and a glass of Prosecco provided) at the front, with everyone else picnicking on the grass (with or without their own chairs). There were stalls with food, a bar, and something of a local market at the rear, with lovely bits and pieces for sale.

We had splashed out on VIP tickets (a bit tricky transporting tables and chairs on the train from London!), so were escorted to our seats - which to our absolute delight were front row (we had no idea!). There was a gap between us and the stage, where the press and photographers were allowed to roam, and with one exception they were very good and crawled along on their knees to take their pics without blocking the view!

Knowing what to wear was a bit of a nightmare, because it was quite mild, but would obviously get colder as the evening wore on - and showers had been forecast. At one point the sun was beating down on our backs - a few moments later the heavens opened! It didn't seem right struggling with umbrellas, raincoats, ponchos etc when there was someone on stage singing their heart out, but it had to be done. I got soaked - but this wasn't entirely due to the rain - the wind caught one of our wine glasses (by this time refilled with our "beverage" of choice") and kindly chucked it over two of us. Isn't it amazing how far a little drop of liquid can go?

The support acts started at around 5.30, then the main concert began at 7.30. I had assumed that each act would come on, do their thing, then go off and that would be it. I was therefore slightly disappointed when, after the overture (the lovely Carousel Waltz), the first person to be announced was ... Lee! I had assumed as he was second billing that he would be the penultimate act. However, it didn't work like that at all. Lee sang Some Enchanted Evening and Dancing Through Life, then left the stage! As you may well imagine, I can't remember the order after that, as it turned out that all the acts were mixed up, coming and going throughout the evening, which was great! Obviously, the big moment for the locals was the return of Susan Boyle, and suddenly they were announcing her, accompanied by Lee, to be singing All I Ask Of You from Phantom. There are several videos floating around of their performance on Twitter and the Tube-thing. I'm sure a clever person can save them somewhere!

To say we were Meadmushed after this performance is putting it mildly. Lee was amazing. This was Susan's first public performance for two years, but Lee led her perfectly, and when their voices soared ...... . Talk about emotional - several of us were in floods of tears by the end. I got the feeling that Susan was a bit Meadmushed too!

Lee also sang ADWD with the Soul Nation choir (and all of us, of course!), finishing it off with the "give me my coloured coat" bit, which I love! Later in the show, he performed "Maria", where the "big" note soared out over the Castle and beyond and seemed to last forever. Wow.

That was it for Lee, really, although he came on for the finale, where the whole line-up sang Thank You For the Music.

The orchestra was fabulous, the other performers (obviously Susan Boyle, but also Christina Bianco, Jai McDowell and the Soul Nation Choir) were all excellent - something for everyone.

We couldn't hang around afterwards, as the Happy Bus was waiting for us. It was an interesting journey back to Dundee! Everyone was very "happy", shall we say, and a few sing offs started - front of bus versus back of bus. It kicked off with The Wheels of the Bus , swiftly followed by the most horrendous version of Any Dream Will Do, then covering everything from Flower of Scotland to Delilah. You name it, we probably sang it! It was very, very funny (and loud!). Our hotel bar was open until the wee small hours for residents, so we were able to mull over the evening's events over a further drink or two!

There are lots of photos on the Glamis Prom Facebook page for those of you who can access it - although I think a lot of these have been transferred to other sites as well.

It was a long old journey from darkest Essex, but worth every single mile (except the bit where my suitcase handle broke on the way home, so I had to carry my overloaded case rather than pull it - but it wouldn't be me without a slight hiccup, now, would it! My biceps are recovering nicely .....).

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Thanks for that, A/Liz! Sounds like a fab time was had by all!

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Thanks A/Liz, what a weekend it was. It certainly was a 'happy' bus on the way home . The driver, although very pleasant, wasn't the best! and as we were making our way back to Dundee, one of the locals shouted (over the ) 'you're going the wrong way' . They were all telling him which direction to go, which resulted in the coach having to be turned round, almost hitting a set of traffic lights! before we started off again in the right direction. We had visions of being set down somewhere in darkest Dundee at 11.30 at night not having a clue where we were, but eventually we arrived back where we had set off earlier that afternoon. The 'happy' bus obviously hadn't heard of satnav. I must say though the Scots know how to enjoy themselves

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

What a fun weekend! But then you lot do know how to enjoy yourselves. Add a bit of Mead and all bets are off!

"A clever person" named Sunny-Mead (with a small bit of help from yours truly) has indeed saved several videos and they are on the website homepage. One of our Facebook group has found a snippet of Maria which we will add in a bit - and JaneW has promised a review!

I love the "happy bus" ride - brings back memories of my trip to Scotland last year. Those Scots do know how to have a good time.

Thanks for posting, ALiz and AnnieB.

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Wow, thanks Jane W for your fantastic diary; that took some remembering and, yes, there was a brass section in the orchestra (I won't tell why I remember it ).

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

I've just been reading Jane W's report - Great stuff! Thanks for that, Jane.

Lee sounds sublime in the 'Maria' vid - the "...say it soft and it's almost like praying..." bit is exquisite (I remember when he did that bit of the song in the ADWD final - I can see why he was given that bit of the song to sing!), as is that looong note!

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Thank you, Jane, for that brilliant report. It was lovely re-living it all again. It really was a fantastic weekend and well worth the long trip north.

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Thanks Jane for your fabulous review and for sharing your experience with us
all. Fantastic read.

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Thank you Jane felt like I was there

Re: Press Release: Glamis Prom 2017

Thank you everyone for your wonderful reviews, bringing it all, with the help of the vids, to life for those of us who couldn't make it. It sounds amazing.

Oh Liz, you made me laugh with not only the wine tipping over but your suitcase malfunction, nothing is ever straightforward when on a trip to see Mr Mead but with the Happy Bus thrown in of such things are special memories made.
