As a kid growing up in the 50s and 60s, I officially hated musicals. in those years, we often went to the drive-in movies. It seemed that there would be either a western or war movie along with some mushy love story or musical. the war movie or western was for my dad, brother and I while the other movie was for mom. I think we were not very respectful of mom's thoughts on her favoritee. It took a few years until I was probably in my 50s when I finally developed an appreciation for musicals. Now, we have many insluding, of course, the entire Rogers and Hammerstein collection which includes my favorite, State Fair. Dick's singing in that movie is always a favorite of mine now.

I have been a member of The Dick Haymes Society since 1974. As I look back on all the years I have enjoyed being a member of such a great society I feel a little sad that the newsletter is coming to an end with the next issue. However, we have done so much for Dick Haymes keeping his name alive and his recordings too. If you do one thing in your life then play a Dick Haymes record as every one will make you go "wow". Thank you Roger, Denis & Maurice and enjoy your lives "in music" as dear Denis Brown always says.

My mother, Eunice Sherman Haymes Gardiner was married to Dick's brother Bob for three years in the early 50s. They divorced but met again in 1968 when mother and I were living in London, and rekindled their romance for several years. Dick and Wendy were in London for several months with their young son and I remember spending two evenings with them at their apartment and attending a spectacular concert that Dick gave outside London. Lots of memories flood as I listen to his voice.
I kept in touch w/ Bob's daughter Candy and was so sad when Bob died of ALS in 1989.

Even though Mr. Sinatra had a smooth voice, Mr. Haymes was smoother. It's sad that he died so young. But, as stars and singers of that golden era who smoked so much on and off screen I'm not surprised he died of lung cancer. His voice was like milk and honey.

I happen to be watching "State Fair" and I just thought Id check on line and see what ever happened to Mr Haymes. I wasn't surprised to read that he died of lung cancer as so many of the stars of the 40's and 50's were always shown smoking those Chesterfields or Camels so its natural that they went the way they did.

The Dick Haymes Society Magazine is the best , the information , Clive, Maurice , Roger, & all the wonderful people who are involved , give us , is awesome. Dick was a superb vocalist , handsome & seems a lovely guy.
The tracks he put down for " history" is just something so inspiring, that I love it that we can listen to his exciting voice any time we choose , ( & that is often in our house).

Listening to Dick sing "The More I See You" right now on my ipod - what perfection and beauty. It takes my breath away every time I hear it.
Though his music 'belonged' to my mother's era, I adore the crooners of that historical time, and Dick Haymes is at the top of the list.
Whatever life threw at him, I hope he knew how wonderful and enduring his gift to us was - that silken, smooth, deep voice - with just enough of a vibration to melt any girl's knees.
