Warriors in Fire-Boots
A tribute to the valour of Fire Fighters.

By
Arthur C. Lockyear.

This book of 318 pages, penned by a former Tyne and Wear fire fighter presents long over-due tribute to the courage of the UK’s fire fighters, which traces a gallant heritage from the time of Queen Victoria and the death of James Braidwood in 1861 at the Great Fire of Tooley Street, London, through fatalities in Birmingham, Liverpool, London and Glasgow in the late 19th and early 20th century, including the Netchells gas works incident which cost the lives of two Birmingham fire fighters, the gallantry shown at the blazing and exploding Shell Filling Factory Morecombe in 1917 which cost the lives of many police officers and fire fighters, to the deaths of Colin Townsley in 1987, Fluer Lombard in 1996 and Michael Miller and Jeffrey Wornham in 2005. Mention is given to the disaster of Cheapside Street, Glasgow when 19 members of the Glasgow Fire Brigade and Salvage Corps were killed, the great floods of 1953 which devastated East Anglia, and earned a number of fire fighters and police officers well deserved gallantry awards, and the gallant efforts of fire fighters at the Manchester Woolworth’s fire of 1979.
This book also presents a fresh perspective on the Blitz – that maelstrom of choking, eye gouging smoke; lacerating heat; shrapnel showered streets, exploding bombs, and collapsing buildings, which in the autumn of 1940, and throughout1941, left UK fire fighters dead, dying and maimed, and Fire Service widows and orphans by the hundred. The gallant story of the London fire-boat which helped rescue the British Expeditionary Force from the beaches of Dunkirk is detailed as is the major oil fires at Llanreath and Thameshaven, the George Medals awarded to Clarence Calypso Gammon of Birmingham City Fire Brigade for gallantry in carrying out a hazardous rescue at a large fire, to Ernest Harmer and his fire crews aboard the blazing HMS Sandhurst which was laden with high explosives in Dover whilst under air attack, and to Sub-Officer Jack Hurrell of London Fire Brigade for his daring rescues of casualties from a flooded air raid shelter. The author also details the stories of the George Crosses awarded to Harry Errington of London and William Mosedale of Birmingham, and other unsung fire fighting heroes.

This dedication gallant and ‘Fallen’ comrades published by ‘Jeremy Mills’ at £14:99 can be ordered telephoning 01484 463 340 or by clicking onto:

The author served for more than thirty years as a fire fighter with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, and is the organiser of the City of Sunderland Remembrance Parade, which as well as being the biggest event of its kind outside of London, is now a national focus for fire fighters on Remembrance Sunday. He was appointed an MBE in 2010 for his voluntary work for this parade.
